Description

Jesmona old fashioned black bullets will no doubt be a source of fond memories for anyone from the North East of England. Thought to be named after the Jesmond area of Newcastle, these peppermint-flavoured boiled sweets were said to be exceedingly popular with miners in the 1960s.

Jesmona black bullets are exclusively made by Maxons of Sheffield, though the sweets have their roots in Darlington. ‘Bullet’ is a North East dialect word for ‘boiled sweets’. It perhaps derives from the use of musket ball moulds to make the first round boiled sweets. The design of the distinctive black-and-white tins has barely changed over the last 100 years, making them instantly recognisable to people of every generation.
